Day 12 - Quitters Hell

On day 12 (or 13, as today would be), I learned something new. Quitting smoking makes significantly reduces the severity of hangovers, despite the quantities of booze consumed. Why is that?

On a purely unscientific basis, I assume that smoking reduces the flow of oxygen to the brain while the nicotine depletes your vitamin C reserves. This in combination with the toxic effects of alcohol make for a nasty ass hangover as your liver works over time without the aid of oxygen and vitamins. Again, this only my retarded theory. All I know is that I drank a ton last night, enough to usually render me worthless the next day, and I’m feeling fine.
Considering it’s 2 days until Halloween, the party atmosphere last night was incredible.

Not only did I brave a smoky bar, I braved it for six hours. Now this isn’t one of those “a couple of people smoking” type places, I’d say that 80% of the patrons were smokers. I was thinking about the taste of a cigarette with my whiskey rocks every 2 minutes. I gnawed the hell out of a straw, but I still managed to have a good time. What I realized is that all I’m really doing is choosing not to smoke. Sure, I have to make that choice 100 times a day, but the more I choose not too, the more it strengthens my choices in the future, which is usually only a few minutes away.

I’m utterly convinced that the way to quit is a simple unplanned quit when you run out of smokes. Everytime I’ve planned on quitting, that “last cigarette” is never as good as I want it to be, and as Murphy’s Law illustrates, what can happen will happen and things never go as planned.

I’m pretty sure that smoking dehydrates you as well. And dehydration is basically what causes hangovers, so it all adds up, my friend.

    I’m proud of you, champ!
